Along the way there is a solid minimalist performance of Michelle Williams and a nice turn by Bruce Greenwood as the blowhard Meeks to go with the vast vistas of nothingness. The film frequently has night scenes where everything is pitch black except for one lantern. Finally, it doesn't matter if they survived or not, just like it doesn't matter if Wendy makes it to Alaska. The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review. I managed about 20 minutes before I'd had enough. I mean, you know little about what these characters are trying to do other than survive, you know even less about who they are, and finally you know nothing about whether or not they succeeded/failed/developed in any significant way as people. I loved the film for being so slow and careful with its buildup, and even though my parents hated the film they can never forget it. Again, I recognize that there are a lot of interesting ingredients in the mix, it just (to me) seems like someone forgot to turn the oven on. Any one of these strategies, perhaps even all of them, might have worked in the right film, but here they fall flat. During the 1840s, six settlers and their guide are caught in a dangerous situation: They are lost, food and water are running out, and the surrounding desert threatens to claim them all. This is the sort of film critics love to praise because the filmmaker has done good work before; and well, there must be something there. They left the main trail at Vale, Oregon and followed the Malheur River to head into the Harney Basin.

As you watch these quiet settlers wander around, ominous music continues to pop up throughout the film. | Fresh (110)

And as I kind of alluded to in the intro, there's something very quilt-like about the film's aesthetic - the stylized color scheme, cutting between spatially isolated compositions - which ties the greater film to the toil we witness Reichardt's women undertaking (with knitting and washing) in the movie itself. It's a journey that's abandoned before it really gets underway. tldr: Slow is fine. The slow pacing and the eventual worsening of circumstances creates real tension. Kelly Reichhardt's absolutely breathtaking and meditative take on the earliest days of the Oregon Trail set in 1845 is a slow-paced, compelling essay on fear, trust, prejudice, and the human instincts and inner demons that flourish to the surface when mankind faces uncertainty and is compelled to witness mortality face to face.

I'm not a huge fan of movies where nothing happens and critics everywhere get into a huge circle jerk over how brave and artistically satisfying the lack of any kind of narrative or character development is. I'm not up on Reichardt's defenders the way you are on her detractors but I do remember reading about how in her movies locations are the character. With Night Moves, the ending is perfectly resolved, there just isn't any more story left to tell. Copyright © Fandango. I thought this was all reflected in the unfulfilled narrative expectations which you criticize: the underwritten characters, the lack of eye line matches, the camera not being allowed to follow the action. That is so true on the claustrophobia! Moving at a contemplative speed unseen in most westerns, Meek's Cutoff is an effective, intense journey of terror and survival in the untamed frontier.

Though the movie doesn't ultimately tell us whether these particular travelers have made a decision to save or doom them, the important thing is that they determined their own destiny the best way they knew how. Since others are talking of the aspect ratio, I'd just like to chime in that I think it was used masterfully. I think it's fair to say that Reichardt is not ambivalent about these characters: the film's sympathies are with Emily, and perhaps with the Indian, and less so with Meek.

She just takes advantage of the situation with the Indian when it pops up - then we're left in the dark about the ultimate outcome of that one and only decision in the film.

Attacks by Indians were not the greatest danger; accidents and disease were. And I think that style, in this case, is really effective. prevent the narrative from ending in the obvious ways. |, May 27, 2011 when it ended I was wondering where the second half of the movie went. This of course ties in perfectly thematically, as our perspective often comes in from that of the women, who too are denied information and left disoriented from both the men and their expedition.
